Job Description:
The Non-Registered Technologist performs and is responsible for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures and acts in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) and those of the Hospital, under direct oversight of a CMLTO registered Medical Laboratory Technologist and/or Medical/Scientific staff. They will support They will support 24 hour / 7 days a week operations working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Non-Registered Technologist will work in Molecular Microbiology (COVID Lab) within the Division of Microbiology.
Job Responsibilities:
- Follow health and safety procedures as per DPLM and Hospital guidelines.
- Recognize unusual quality control results, take remedial action and document outcome
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and records of testing
- Practice and perform a variety of laboratory tests and procedures with accurately and precisely within defined time expectations (TATs)
- Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Recognize abnormal and critical results, and takes appropriate actions according to the established SOP, as required.
- Review and monitor daily QC results
- Perform quality control and documents control results
- Rotate through all areas of the laboratory as assigned
- Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take remedial action, and document action, within their scope of practice, as required
- Strictly follow standard operating procedures
- Understands the practice and theory of quality control (discipline specific) in Laboratory Medicine.
- Assess results against diagnosis to ensure relevant results correspond with known patient data, as appropriate
- Prioritizes own workload to ensure efficiency and timely results.
- Report failures, issues & action taken to immediate supervisor
- Participate in the development, implementation and support of the policies, processes and procedures within the Quality System to support the effective operation of DPLM
- Report ongoing or unresolved QC issues to immediate supervisor
- Prepare and issue of samples/product/specimen
- Follow inventory control system and communicate status to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated customer service orientation and ability to relate well to others
- Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and adaptable to new technologies and processes
- Solid computer skills
- Demonstrated intent to become registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) as a Medical Lab Technologist
- Strong organization skills and ability to work well under pressure and prioritize
- Ability to communicate clearly, written and oral
- Experience with paediatrics is an asset
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to make decisions based on knowledge and experience
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills
- Critical thinking skills, highly accurate
- Previous job-related experience required: Laboratory Technologist or technician experience an asset.
- Bachelor of Science MLS or equivalent
- Relevant special technical skills
