Job Description:

SickKids serves a diverse population of patients and families by offering holistic comprehensive services across a wide range of clinical specialities. The Department of Neurology at the Hospital for Sick Children is looking for an Academic and Social-Emotional Programming Assistant to join our multidisciplinary team in The Epilepsy Classroom, an Education and Community Partnership Program with the Ontario Ministry of Education. The Academic Assistant should have the unique skills to work with and support students learning needs and social-emotional well-being. The Academic Assistant will work with school-age children in a small classroom setting with a primarily staff to student ratio of 3:8.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in team meetings and case conferences
  • Use and support students’ use of assistive technology (WordQ, SpeakQ, Read & Write Gold, Google Classroom, Promethean Board)
  • Complete administrative tasks (booking space, coordinating calendars, answering phone, filing, photocopying, classroom maintenance scheduling etc.)
  • Assist in delivery of student’s academic instruction (Direct Instruction, e.g., Saxon Math, Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading, Rave-o, SRA spelling and Reasoning and  Writing
  • Communicate with parents as needed
  • Promote emotional, social and behavioural well being of students
  • Assist special education teacher with programming needs
  • Assist with questionnaire scoring and data input
  • Respond to, monitor, and record students’ seizure activity, and administer medication as prescribed
  • Plan and lead social skills group programming
  • Assist with student registration and orientation
  • Support special teacher’s preparation time by implementing follow-up programming or fitness programming

Job Requirements:

  • Previous experience with computers, assisted technology, and data entry/research considered to be an asset
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the area of children development, psychology, or social work
  • CYW or CLS qualifications accepted; note position is that of an academic and treatment assistant
  • Practical experience working with children with learning and social-emotional needs
