Job Description:

The Capital Operations team at Shopify is responsible for the day-to-day operations, underwriting and credit at Shopify Capital. Our primary responsibilities include underwriting and approving applications, disbursement of funds, credit risk analytics and portfolio management, overseeing credit policy and procedures, and projects to scale the platform for continued long-run growth (platform development, new products, etc.).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead cross-functional projects, including new product roll-outs or improving efficiencies in our underwriting and operational flows
  • Executing performance management, impact assessments and people development to deliver high-impact
  • Develop reporting and dashboards for senior management
  • You will manage the day-to-day operations of Shopify Capital:
  • Building and managing a high-performing team, elevating top talent to help maximize their impact and achieve their full potential. This includes:
  • Ensure staffing and hiring for your team align with the product roadmap
  • Monitor adherence to service-level agreements established between internal and external teams
  • Act as a decision-maker for Shopify Capital applications by leveraging recommendations from a team of analysts
  • Communicating change in a fast-paced environment
  • Monitor adherence to Shopify Capital’s underwriting policies and procedures
  • Building and delivering training or enablement content
  • Utilize a strong credit skillset to identify opportunities for scale (e.g., improving efficiencies in our operational flow or revising underwriting criteria for growth)
  • Guide the team on escalated issues, including remittance refunds and relief requests from the Collections team

Job Requirements:

  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in leading a credit underwriting team at a traditional bank, alternative lender or related field
  • You have demonstrated stakeholder management skills with internal/external partners and possess the ability to work with a diverse set of people
  • Strong project management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience; advanced degrees or credentials (e.g., MBA, CFA) are a bonus
  • Deep understanding of business credit, underwriting and portfolio management
  • Curious and resourceful – you seek to understand
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-moving and ambiguous work environment to navigate through change
