Job Description:

The Senior Asset Engineer is responsible for their programs from beginning to end, including defending the program in regulatory proceedings. This role will have ownership of approximately $20 million of yearly capital expenditures. The Senior Asset Engineer must balance technical and business needs in the decisions they make. Distribution assets are between the substation breaker and the customer meter and consist of transformers, switches, underground lines, and overhead lines at the voltage classes 25 kV and below.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Review existing processes and work with other groups to implement business improvements in the execution and/or governance of capital programs and projects.
  • Lead cross-functional subject matter experts in the development of multi-year execution plans for the execution of capital programs.
  • Develop and defend business cases.
  • Provide justifications for unplanned infrastructure replacements/modifications.
  • Act as owner of capital programs and use project management fundamentals to ensure programs are executed according to the planned scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Lead the development of strategic plans to address Distribution asset issues.
  • Support leaders by undertaking other duties as necessary to advance business objectives
  • Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of process maps, standards, procedures, guidelines, and other business documentation required to improve and optimize the execution and governance of asset replacement capital programs and projects.
  • Gather Distribution Assets (primarily electrical, some civil) performance data and issues that may impact the safe and reliable delivery of electrical service.
  • Create justifications for changes to equipment specifications, maintenance practices, commissioning requirements, design guidelines, and/or construction standards.
  • Financial, scheduling, and scope variance reporting on capital programs.
  • Develop or update Asset Management Plans (AMPs).

Job Requirements:

  • Strong project management, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to hold people accountable
  • Technical writing: Excellent communication skills, written, oral, and presentation
  • Project Management knowledge and experience with a proven history of delivering on projects
  • 10+ years of relevant experience with the following knowledge and skills:
  • High degree of financial acumen
  • Registered as a Professional with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering or Technologist Diploma in Engineering with a Professional Licensee, P.L.(Eng), designation.
  • Engaged and thrives working in a team environment

  • Familiarity with asset life cycle management fundamentals, including maintenance practices, asset utilization, planning of asset replacements, and disposal strategy
  • An achiever that takes initiative, executes, and makes decisions
  • Strong knowledge of the operations of a utility distribution system, its equipment, and general processes
  • Organized and disciplined; able to set their priorities
