Job Description:
Reporting to the Associate Vice-President Research, the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Research Advisor provides operational leadership for Brock’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Action Plan, promotes a culture of diversity in research, and provides advice to Brock researchers, Deans, and the Vice-President Research on considerations of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization as these apply to research strategy, planning, program compliance, and grant applications.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership, expertise, and direction in formulating, revising, and achieving internal goals for equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization related to research
- Advise the Vice-President, Research and senior leadership team on equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization practices and processes in research
- Liaise with University partners to share resources, coordinate, and/or deliver collaborative services.
- Develop and deliver training to members at all levels of the University community on the mitigation of biases in the research enterprise
- Maintain current expertise in EDI practices and policies for the research landscape at Canadian academic and research institutions, to support the ongoing development and implementation of best practices at Brock
- Coordinate EDI education and implementation initiatives aimed at researchers, graduate students, and practitioners in every disciplinary and operational division
- Liaise with a complex and varied range of government, Tri-Agency, and other external research sponsors regarding EDI issues and programs
- Advance the University’s research enterprise and performance in achieving EDI metrics
- Build relationships with faculty, graduate students, and others to understand current issues, barriers, and opportunities for EDI in research
- Provide individual specialist advice to researchers on best practices for integrating EDI considerations into their research programs
- Collaborate and manage relations with internal stakeholders across academic and administrative units to develop and implement initiatives to ensure all research-related EDI action plan milestones are attained
- Manage and oversee University responses to ever-changing EDI requirements for research set by federal and provincial legislation, policies, and external research sponsors and ensure updates are communicated internally
- Working with colleagues in the research enterprise and in Marketing and Communications, develop and execute a communications plan to increase the visibility, awareness, and usage of EDI best practices internally and externally
- Lead the research, development, coordination, and communication of policies and practices for advancing EDI in research throughout the University
- Manage EDI reporting and accountability relationships with multiple external research sponsors and oversight agencies to ensure continuing eligibility for essential research funding for the institution
Job Requirements:
- High degree of listening, verbal, written, inter-departmental and external communications expertise to achieve University objectives
- Ability to work independently, and as part of a team, in a supportive, user-oriented manner, when dealing with issues and achieving strategic objectives
- Proven project-management skills, adaptability and flexibility, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and achieve objectives
- Experience in a Research environment is preferred
- Masters preferred
- 5+ years’ professional experience executing numerous priorities and multiple projects
- Curriculum development or instructional experience is an asset
- Formal training or certification related to EDI is an asset
- Innovative and strategic thinking with a broad vision for the role of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization in achieving research excellence and a well-developed understanding of best practices for advancing EDI in research
- Collaborative leadership style and a demonstrated track record of taking initiative, leading complex projects
- Experience with and knowledge of federal and provincial research funding programs
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups and individuals
- Demonstrated experience in a public sector or educational environment is an asset
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
- Ability to masterfully gather and analyze data, assess needs, and deliver practical solutions that drive result
- 3+ years in development and implementation of EDI programs, including providing leadership for unit or institutional initiatives
- Ability to take initiative, be analytical, solve problems, and exercise judgment effectively
- Demonstrated capacity to give persuasive presentations and create learning materials for broad audiences
- Demonstrated ability to understand, be flexible and sensitive, and enable diverse viewpoints and approaches to achieve complex goals and meet the needs of a diverse group of collaborators
- Strong professional judgement, tact, discretion and confidentiality in dealing with institutional data, strategy development, confidential information and communications.
- A strong awareness of current EDI trends and demonstrated understanding of systemic issues and of the legal and legislative frameworks
