Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager, Urban Design, this position is responsible to provide Urban Design review of development applications, policies and special projects.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conducts review of formal Development applications and proposals – Site Plan Approvals, re-zoning, Block Plans, Urban Design and architectural guidelines, and manages all stages of processing including circulation, commenting, review and recommendations, as well as applications to amend the City sign by-law presented to City Council.
- Prepares and implements City-driven studies, urban design guidelines, architectural control guidelines/criteria and building improvement programs.
- Organize and facilitate meetings, and attend professional conferences, forums, discussions to keep abreast with current planning and urban design trends.
- Develops, updates and implements the City’s new urban design and architectural design guidelines and standards
- Manages special projects including urban design studies prepared in house or with consultants.
- Develops, implements and maintains the city-wide Architectural Control Compliance Programs.
- Provides architectural design review and clearance to building permit application.
- Makes presentations to Council, Planning and other committees, attends Public meetings; attends Ontario Municipal Board meetings as expert witness when required.
- Provides advisory functions on urban design and architectural matters and advocates for urban design and architectural solutions; coordinates with other associate disciplines – landscape architecture, policy and development land use planning, transportation planning and engineering, developers and other agencies.
Job Requirements:
- Good coordination, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent understanding of the development, planning, urban design and architectural processes.
- Over four (4) years, up to and including eight (8) years experience in Urban Design and Architecture.
- Current Enrolment to full membership with Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) or Ontario Professional Planner Institute/Canadian Institute of Planners (OPPI/CIP) or Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) is an asset.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to draft and edit clear concise reports and planning documents and to present and justify them to senior staff, Council, public meetings.
- Excellent design and graphic skills – manual and computer, knowledge of CAD, 3D modelling, image processing, desktop publishing; computer literacy and experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other graphics programs.
- Equivalent to University graduation with additional specialized courses (Master’s degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, or equivalent).
- A valid non-probationary class G licence and clean driving record..
